5 Profitable Businesses to Start to Make KES. 5,000 Daily in 2024

2023 was a good year for business. I earned KES. 13,908,503.12 plus online.

Despite my other brick and motor businesses suffering a blow by Covid 19, I still managed to grow my wealth.

Would you like to know how I did it?

As soon as the Kenyan government put lockdown measures into place I got into my pajamas and started working from home.

1. I revamped my Youtube channel and created consistent relevant content for my subscribers. 
2. I started creating content on-demand for my blog (Joon Online).
3. Without sweating it I created an android app for my blog (Joon Online on Playstore).

Within months of doing utterly nothing but content creation, I started getting paid for my content.

In the end, I earned KES. 13,908,503.12 plus in the year 2023 with my blog, Youtube Channel, and my mobile app.

Sounds too good to be true, right? But it is.

As much as I want to shed more light on this, today’s post isn’t about the money I made in 2020 and how I made it.

Rather, it is about the brick and motor businesses that I tried my hands-on afterward. Of course with the money, I made online.

Without wasting your time I will show you five profitable businesses that I have done personally. Earned lots of cash from and that you can also try to make money in 2024.

1. Selling clothes.

As soon as October 2023 I had started selling clothes. Specifically women’s clothes.

We dubbed this “Joon Clothing”.

An arm of Joon Online that would further deal with sales of clothes and other clothing merchandise.

Everything else irrelevant, is the clothing business profitable?

Of course, it is.

But it is also expensive to start.

For the perspective of how expensive it is, I will show you a breakdown of what went into starting Joon Clothing.

And to show you how profitable it is, I will show you the Joon Clothing ledger.

So how much do you really need to start selling clothes in Kenya?

Ideally, you only need one cloth to start selling clothes. But what if it is a boutique that’s on your mind?

How much do you really need to set up?

On average, you will need KES. 300,000.

Before you start hooting and winning about how too much of a quote my budget is, remember, you aren’t doing this business yet; on the other hand, I am already doing it.

If you want to start the business in town in a city such as Kisumu, Nairobi, or Mombasa, almost a quarter of this money will go into rent.

For example, the rent for Joon Clothing is KES. 7,000 and this space is barely a 10×10.

Rent is paid for three months in advance and when as a new tenant you also pay three months rent deposit. Leave for water and electricity bill. And the location is slightly off the CBD.

If you want to do business in the CBD though, you will pay more.

For example, commercial buildings such as the K-city business pack in Kisumu charge KES. 10,000 for rent payable for three months in advance with a 3 months deposit charge for new tenants.

Need I mention that there is also a tax charge that is passed to the client?

In short, you pay an up of KES. 64,000 just to secure the commercial space. 

Then comes the cost of fixing the space to your taste. Sometimes even fixing the tiles and ceiling. A cost which sometimes is even more than the rent and deposit combined.

But you want to start selling clothes in Kisumu right? So that’s an extra 60,000 spent before opening your doors for business.

Then there is the license fee which ranges somewhere between KES 8,000 and 15,000 depending on the location of the business and the area in terms of space.

If you ask me, by the time you get to this level you will have spent an average of KES. 135,000 in the business.

Where to get women clothes in Wholesale 

One thing you’ll learn the hard way if you take this guide for granted is how important it is to choose your suppliers wisely.

While there are suppliers who are already in your town and will deliver merchandise to your doorsteps at a wholesale price, not all of them are so ethical to only sell to you as a retailer.

They will also deliver to your client for the same price.

If you find the best suppliers for the best price, you can easily maneuver your way into selling affordably or even match these other crook’s prices.

Some of the most fashionable women clothes currently trendings in Kenya are: –

1. Dresses which you can get in Kamkunji for the lowest price.
2. Tops which you can get in Eastleigh (Amal or Bangkok plaza)
3. T-shirts which you can get in Eastleigh (Amal or Bangkok plaza)
4. Cargo pants which you can get in Kamkunji for the lowest price.
5. Body shapers which you can get in Kamkunji for the lowest price.
6. Skirts which you can get in Eastleigh (Amal or Bangkok plaza)
7. Tshirt dresses which you can get in Eastleigh (Amal or Bangkok plaza)
8. Shirt dresses which you can get in Eastleigh (Amal or Bangkok plaza).

An alternative to buying wholesale from Nairobi would be to shop in Nakuru or Kampala. But I guess you already know that.

How much profits can you make selling Women’s clothes in Kenya?

Well, that depends on how much you got these clothes for.

For example, there are dresses that you will buy for KES. 550 and sell for KES. 999; tops you will get for KES 280 and sell for 500 and buy cargo pants for KES. 550 and sell for KES. 850.

It needs no telling that if you sell so much then you will make so much with these profit margins.

Depending on the size of your stock and your target market, you will purchase a whole range of merchandise in different sizes.

And it is almost certain that you will spend as much as KES. 100,000 to stock your shop well.

Did I already mentioned that you will need social media pages for your products and a budget to promote your products?

Why not use that extra KES. 50,000 to push your products? Be sure to track conversions and the value for each client you attract online.

2. Food Kiosk.

If I did not mention that Joon Online also has a foods division that I would be lying to you.

We recently launched our android mobile app “Joon Kitchen” which you can now download for FREE from play store.

But how good is the food kiosk business and how much do you need to start?

Cost of Starting a Restaurant, Food Kiosk or a Mini Hotel in Kenya.

Perhaps I should already mention that we spent a little over KES. 500,000 to set up this business.

Don’t be fooled though, the app was built in-house by Joon Online Developers. Its cost doesn’t count.

To bring you to speed with everything else; it will cost you a little over KES. 120,000 which is basically the rent for the kitchen with extra sitting space for walking clients.

Broken down, this is the cost of rent for 3 months with 3 months deposit if the rent is KES. 20,000.

Could be more or less.

Remember, these are actual figures from our business that’s already running in K-city Business Park, Kisumu.

Need I mention that this money is exclusive of kitchen fittings which by the way cost us KES. 55,000.

Floor, chimney, and ceiling fittings which cost us KES. 40,000 and everything else that makes a business ready for business?

Equipment Needed to Start a Restaurants, Fast Foods, or Just Foods Business.

1. Fryer – Caterina Brand Goes for KES. 36,000
2. 3+1 Free Standing Gas Cooker – ranges between KES. 22,000 and KES. 27,000
3. Commercial blender – KES. 20,000
4. Utensils – KES. 30,000
5. Chips cutter – KES. 6,000
6. Miscellaneous – KES – 10,000

Food Items Needed to Start a Small Restaurant.

This will depend entirely on your menu.

For example, if your food kiosk is entirely a fast food business then you will only need to stock foodstuffs needed to prepare such kinds of food.

See our menu below and guess how much we spent on stock on the fairs day. KES. 30,000 only.

With time we learned that there are some foods that should only be prepared on order and such we don’t stock them.

Rather, we get them from the nearest suppliers and prepare them as soon as there is an order.

Need I mention that this works and orders still get delivered in time?

Where is the money in this menu?

Money is in the snacks, money is in the chips corner. Money is everywhere.

Our kiosk being in Kisumu, we can only serve you within town. Orders outside town attract a delivery fee charged by the proximity of the delivery address from the restaurant.

Lest I forget. Joon Kitchen has its bikes, three bikes for faster delivery.

You can include that cost on your starting budget if you intend to start BIG.

3. Start a Small Consulting Business

Consultancy, what is this?

Ideally, this is a professional service that gives advice on a particular field.

For example, I have a background in business management.

So, often times when businesses reach out to me to seek industry counsel, to ask for strategies that can help grow their business; to seek advice and functional expertise on governance, strategic leadership, reorganization, finance, risk management, and stuff; then at that point, I am a business management consultant.

Get my point?

In other words, at “Joon” we also offer business management consultancy and we have an office to show for it.

But what really goes into starting a small consulting firm in Kenya?

1. 1^st there is the education bit.

What’s your professional background?

Are you an engineer, a lawyer, medic, name it… Having an educational qualification in your area of interest sets you up for acceptable practice in your area of expertise.

2. Then there are other things like setting up goals for your business, making a website for it, getting certified (if there is any certification needed for the kind of consultancy you want to engage in); choosing a target market, getting an office, creating offerings, setting rates, networking with people among other things that aid growth of consultancy businesses.

If you ask me, there is more that goes to starting a consultancy business than just what’s listed above.

Perhaps we should begin with the registration bit.

It costs KES. 11,000 to register a company in Kenya and at least KES. 28,000 to get a business permit for consulting. At least in most counties.

But that’s just too low a price to pay for a functional consulting enterprise.

The gravy on costs is the cost of furniture and rent.

A very nice place with good security, quest and considered average for a starting consulting firm will cost an average of KES. 10,000 and KES. 15,000 a month.

And like in all the other businesses we have discussed above, landlords ask for a deposit on rent which is always 3 months and 3 months rent.

If you ask me, that’s about KES 60,000 to get a space for your business. Give or take.

Depending on the quality of furniture you want to use in your business and your corporate colors, you may be forced to redecorate the entire space.

And don’t forget, it costs money to do all that.

Do you have that money with you?

If YES, set aside KES. 150,000 for an average desk, swivel chairs, and a boardroom table.

Not to forget a laptop or desktop, printer, and other office supplies needed for smooth operations.

Is consulting a good business to start in 2024?

Of course yes.

Other than the cost of starting the business, there is nothing else to worry about.

Just be good in your job, perform an outstanding job always – when you are contracted and you will make it.

4. Affiliate Marketing.

Did I already mention that I earned KES. 13,908,503.12 plus online in 2023?

Well, that entire amount came from affiliate marketing, and only a small portion from other activities we do online.

If you aren’t familiar with affiliate marketing, this is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s products.

For example, if you know women who have infants and you want to make money off their children, instead of making to sell your own diapers, sell pampers products and earn for referring these mothers to pampers.

While it may seem simple in explanation, it needs hard work.

Sometimes it will even need to you create a website from which you can refer traffic.

But worry not, coz I’ve got you. I will create a ready to use affiliate marketing website for you.

Otherwise, you can also do it yourself by following this checklist.

1. Create a website for your business – note, some are free some are paid for. Websites that are paid for look more professional.
2. Choose hosting for a site – Hosting is like the engine for the website. It’s what makes your website visible online. The best hosting packages are expensive. And they are also the most reliable.
3. How should I choose and buy a domain? Then there is the domain name. This is the address where your business is found. For example, the domain name for this website is www.Joon.co.ke. Try to choose a name that resonates with what you want to promote.
4. Content: what to put on your website.
5. Promoting websites: To get traffic to your business you will have to either advertise or do search engine optimization from the onset.
6. Text localization: do this to attract other geolocations.

Other than using a website to sell affiliate products, you can also use:

1. Telegram
2. Youtube
3. Native Advertising
4. Facebook ads
5. Mobile Apps

Among others.

Is Affiliate Marketing Still a Profitable Business to Start in 2021?

Of course, it is. And if all goes as planned, this blog can make an upwards of KES. 17,000,000 in affiliate sales in 2024.

5. Try Your Hands in Agri-Business.

Can I tell you a secret?

I don’t like dirt. Never have. I don’t know how to hold a jembe. But guess what? I am a farmer.

I just started recently.

I leased two acres of land for sugarcane plantations and bought another acre for goat and poultry farming.

Even though I only have 7 hens at the moment, I plan to keep as many as 100 goats and 1,000 indigenous chickens by the end of the year.
