Names like Jon Morrow, Ryan Robinson, Brian Clark, Neil Patel, and thousands of other notable bloggers.

All who already have at least one in-depth article on the same topic. And are all ranking for the same keyword above 92,300,000 plus other blog results.

But who am I?

Wow! I can’t believe I just used the C-word to describe myself.

My point, despite only blogging for one year, not having gone through any blogging course, and not at any point being sure if this thing would ever pay; I started my blog (Joon Online for Ksh. 1,599 only) and proudly earned more than $10,000 on my first year.

I don’t know about you but, in my village, this is a lot of money.

As such, earning Ksh. 1,000,000 plus though blogging (in my village) gives me as much a right to claim blogging kingship as it gives Neil Patel the right to be a King digital marketer of our generation. Sips… Haha 🙂

That settled, in today’s post on how to make money online, we look at 7 different ways that anyone who has a blog can monetize their traffic and explain how each method goes.

1. Advertising

If you visited this website in November or December 2019 then chances are you noticed us running a sponsorship message right by our logo.

That sponsorship was part of an advertising deal between Joon Online and XM Global.

But what is advertising on a blog and how does it work?

As Wikipedia puts it, advertising is a marketing communication that employs an openly sponsored, non-personal message to promote or sell a product, service, or idea.

In blogging, the most common ad types used by the majority of bloggers are CPC and CPM ads.

Disappointingly, CPC and CPM don’t pay as much as independent ads shown above, but they’ll keep you going when you can’t find private ads.

Examples of programs to join for CPC and CPM advertising are Adsense, MGID, and Taboola…

As an ad publisher on a CPC (Cost per click) also PPC (pay per click) deal, you’re given banner ads or native ads to place on your website’s ad placement areas, and each time a visitor clicks on them you get paid.

CPM deals on the other hand imply that you (the website owner) get paid a fixed amount based on how many people view the ads. CPM ads are also known as cost per 1,000 impressions ads because they are charged per 1,000 views.

If you ask me, independent/private ads are better than CPC and CPM ads

How to get brands to advertise on your website.

As much as my earning $2,008 on a single advertising deal may be enticing, you must recognize that I did not just start blogging in my first month, and BOOM! there were thousands of brands already willing to work with me, it took time.

It took a whole year for me to get there.

A year to position my blog as a personal finance website with an inimitable interest in Forex trading, brokerage, and affiliate marketing.

I created luscious content and commanded the industry in my right. I still do BTW, hehe.

And even before XM, I was sure I’d get direct advertisers on Joon.

Because which brand doesn’t want to position itself in front of our 97,380 monthly visitors, with 481,620 monthly views?

I don’t know!

To get brands to have confidence in your blog and to advertise with you, show them what they’ll miss if they pass. Show them your active email subscribers, thousands of daily readers, and an audience that’d rather be on your website than elsewhere for a specific product.

You can do this by making a media kit for your blogging business.

It’s OK to blurb about your brand and show facts (analytical stats from Google Analytics). And current conversion rates.

You would be surprised who wants to advertise on your blog and how much they are willing to pay.

To avoid over-quoting or under-quoting advertising prices, benchmark other sites to see what they charge.

2. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing involves promoting a product or service that belongs to other brands for financial gains.

Because Joon started in December 2018, we were only able to earn $57 in our first year.

How to Use Affiliate Marketing to Make Money Blogging

While affiliate marketing sounds as easy as just signing up for affiliate programs, using the links on your website, and waiting to cash in when people buy through your links, it is not that easy.

To make a reasonable income via affiliate marketing you’ll need to have good traffic coming to your blog.

And what better way is there to get quality traffic than to produce quality content and optimize for search engines?

Still remember the phrase, the more the merrier?

That sh*t (more readers) works wonders in affiliate marketing.

As an authority blog in your niche, you will often get emails from brands who want to work with you because either the content on your blog resonates with their brand, they want to get a competitive edge over other brands in the space, or basically to increase their market share.

Don’t turn them down, take this as an opportunity to make money with your website.

You can earn two ways with sponsored posts. Either as a publisher, just giving brands a platform to share with your audience, and/or also as a freelance writer.

You can offer to write for them at an additional cost.

This is also important because when you do the writing, you control the narrative.

At Joon, we charge $300 for sponsored blog content with 2 do-follow links (valid for 1 year). We don’t mind if the links are affiliate links – provided the post is on personal finance topics.

Below is an example of a company seeking to post sponsored content on Joon basically because they read a similar post here and liked it.

For the record, I charge $150 or more to write a single sponsored blog post.

The best part about the sponsored content opportunities is, that you can also pitch companies you have an interest in working with.

Instead of waiting for them to reach out, just pen down a simple inquiry email and ask if they’d be willing to sponsor a post for your audience.

A company that’s focused on promoting its brand will get back to you. And again, you want to be ready with your media kit when they do.

Show them your audience statistics, your social media followers, your mailing list, and any other relevant info that would make them choose you instead of me. Haha…

4. Sell Digital Products to Make Money Blogging in Africa

Digital products are things like: – eBooks, online courses/workshops, images, videos, or music; apps, plugins, or themes.

Most bloggers who already use sponsored posts, ads, or affiliate marketing to make money blogging are also prone to selling digital products.

If you ask me, these bloggers already have a huge following thus good conversion rates and solid income.

Should you decide to monetize your blog with digital products, make sure you identify a problem in your niche and create a solution through your product.

Simplify the product as much as you can, and test prices on pre-launch to see what your visitors would be comfortable paying.

If all goes well, go ahead. Make money.

5. Make Money Blogging by Selling Membership

If your blog is sort of professional and you want to monetize without digital product ads or sponsored posts, why not sell membership plans?

Examples of professional sites selling membership to interested visitors are: – the Bloggers Association of Kenya, The Founder Magazine, and Bizna among other blogs.

The best part about selling membership on your website is, that you can project the exact amount to expect in the next month or year.

To make it more enticing, also include awards for whatever profession you are dealing with. Could be business, Forex accountancy, or HR.

Awards also help stamp your blog as an authority in the region.

6. Use Your Blog to Sell Physical Products

If your business is already selling physical products and you have a website, use the blog section to create content with buyer keywords.

For example, if you have a store that sells electronics, you can always be the first to update the web with new products. You can also do reviews and allow visitors to review products too.

From experience, most visitors who go to websites with buyer-related keywords end up buying. Especially if the user experience on your blog is good and they find you genuine.

An alternative to selling your products and keeping inventory is drop-shipping.

As the definition goes, drop-shipping is a chain management process that allows you as a retailer or a blogger to sell physical products without owning them or ever keeping stock.

Your job is to sell physical products on your website and when you close a deal, your supplier packs, and ships the orders on your behalf. You keep anything you charge on top of the supplier price.

7. Make Money Blogging With Podcast Sponsorship

A podcast is an episodic series of digital audio files that a user can download to listen to. Alternatively, the word “podcast” may refer to the individual component of such a series or an individual media file. Wikipedia

If there are interesting topics in your blog that you’d like to discuss, why not put them in podcast series and then monetize your feeds by getting brands to sponsor content on the podcasts?

Alternatively, you can ask for donations, sell premium episodes, sell ad spaces, syndicate your show to YouTube, and earn on CPC or CPM methods.
