Benard Odira a rice farmer from Nyatike sub-county, county after receiving his seeds was filled with joy and thanked the county government for not giving farmers their back.
“We are grateful to the county because they have given us these seeds at the right time and they will help reduce our budget as farmers this season,” Odira said.
Susan Adhiambo, a sunflower farmer in Kuria East, cited that by diversifying into different food sources like fish and seeds, the county government is not only ensuring a stable food supply but also creating opportunities for selling surplus produce through farmers, hence adding some value to their worth.

“This forward-thinking approach will not only benefit our people’s businesses but also contribute to overall food security in the long run,” she said.
Farmers plea
The farmers also called on the national government to release fertilizers at affordable prices to help cut costs on their side as farmers avoid running at losses each season.
Speaking during the flagging off of the seeds, Migori governor Ochillo Ayacko called on the farmers to help improve food security in the region to secure the future.
“By equipping our farmers with certified seeds, we are empowering them to harness the full potential of their work and maximize their agricultural yields, We firmly believe that when our farmers succeed, our entire county thrives, Ochillo said.

He promised to ensure Migori became food-secured and had a surplus to sell to other countries.
The county government, through Agriculture CECM Mosenda Moseti, cited that investment in food is a smart move towards ensuring food security for the future.

In Migori County, there is rice farming in Nyatike, sub county fish farming in Lake Victoria, and across the county, fish ponds, potato farming, and sunflower farming mostly in Kuria, to mention just a few.
