Nairobi residents will soon have access to complimentary, clean tap drinking water in all hotels and restaurants operating within the county.
Sospeter Mumbi, the Roysambu MCA, proposed a motion in the Nairobi County Assembly, advocating for city hotels to ensure the provision of free tap water.
“The motion aims to guarantee that free, clean tap water is readily available and accessible to customers who prefer tap water over bottled options in all hotels and restaurants,” Mumbi stated.

The Nairobi County Government intends to supply clean tap water to residents and to refurbish or install new water points around the city for the benefit of Nairobians,” remarked Sospeter.
Robert Alai, the Kileleshwa MCA, seconded the motion, emphasizing the importance of water as a basic necessity of life.
He highlighted that some hotels imposed high water charges, making it challenging for certain customers to afford, as these establishments do not offer complimentary clean drinking tap water.

“It is high time for the county government to rehabilitate and reinstall water points in Nairobi. Access to clean drinking water is becoming increasingly difficult for residents. Hotels should also prioritize offering complimentary clean tap water to their patrons,” Alai emphasized.
The motion on Tuesday 19th March, received overwhelming support from other members of the assembly, who underscored the importance of ensuring equitable access to clean drinking water for all residents, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
Additionally, plans are underway to implement educational campaigns to raise awareness about the benefits of tap water and reduce reliance on bottled water, thereby promoting environmental sustainability.
