Suna West Member of Parliament Peter Masara has again outrightly called out the governor of Migori County and his administration for the misappropriation of funds and underdevelopment evident in the county.

The outspoken and contentious lawmaker, renowned for his candid critiques of the county government, has sparked intense debates across the county. His forthright stance has garnered significant support from many who believe in holding the governor accountable.

Others, though, have seen this attack as deliberate and self-serving of Masara’s interest in becoming the new Migori governor in 2027.

During an interview on a local radio show, Masara mentioned he speaks for the people of Suna West in Migori County.

He highlighted that the community, acting as a single powerful voter, casts their votes across six political positions, expecting solid service delivery from each of their elected representatives.

“I meet my constituents every Saturday, and some of their issues can only be handled by the county government; as their trusted leader, I can help push such agendas to the relevant authorities until they are addressed,” said Masara.

Pascal, a Migori resident, called in to disregard the MP’s statement listing several developments achieved by the county government, which include the ECDE classrooms and cabros along the roads.

“I want the MP to stop being negative and look at our roads, which are now advanced, have cabros, and we also have completed ECDE classrooms,” stated Pascal.

Migori received Ksh. 11 billion from the National Treasury

When responding to this, the legislator clearly stated the record straight and pointed out that Migori received Ksh. 11 billion from the National Treasury, which is 11 times the sum of what the 8 MPs get annually and, when used prudently, will transform Migori.

“The Nation Newspaper today listed Migori as an expense extravagant expense, collecting Ksh. 146 million annually and spending over 200 million on travels that add no development value, which shouldn’t be the case.

We want to see our children educated, empowered, and employed, county road networks done, hospitals equipped, and markets advanced to balance what we get as a county,” stressed Masara.

The legislator further alleged that the MCA’s are hiding in fear unleashed on them by county bosses crippling their oversight role.

Masara supports the new proposed Ward Development Fund embedded in the NADCO Report that aids the MCA in getting money directly from the ex-checker to facilitate ward developments and to curb discrimination from county bosses.

Masara affirmed that a leader attracts people when he is easily accessible, with public participation being paramount in development dispensation and solving societal issues.

Emerging Rifts Among ODM Allies in Migori

In Migori, a noticeable rift has emerged among members of the ODM party: Uriri’s MP, Mark Nyamitta; Governor Ochillo Ayacko; and Suna West’s MP, Peter Masara. This division is quite striking, considering that the trio were once close allies, campaigning for one another during the election period.

Masara made his mark on the political scene in 2017 by securing a notable victory as an independent candidate, ousting former MP Obiero Ndiege, who was running under the ODM party banner.

In the 2022 elections, Masara successfully held onto his seat by first winning the ODM party’s primary elections and then representing the party in the general election. He faced off once more against his formidable rival, Obiero Ndiege, and managed to secure a significant victory over him.
